Kyoto(京都, Kyōto) is the storehouse of Japan’s traditional culture and the stage on which much of Japanese history has been played out. 17 Unesco World Heritage sites, more than 1600 Buddhist temples and over 400 Shintō shrines, combine to make Kyoto one of the world’s most culturally rich cities.
Going to Kyoto can be compared to taking a journey to the past, especially in Gion. Many old traditions are still practiced in Gion, not least of all being the famous gaisha of Japan. Gaisha, meaning artist, are female entertainers who dance, play instruments, and spark conversation. Try visiting Kyoto during spring and view the amazing sakura trees while they last.
To get to Kyoto, you will be flying into the Kansai Airport, the same as Osaka. Kyoto and Osaka are part of the same metropolitan area, so if you'd prefer the bustling city over tea ceremony and walking through a curtain in time, visit Osaka next!
Kyoto served as Japan's capital and the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868. It is now the country's seventh largest city with a population of 1.4 million people and a modern face. Countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.
Kyoto Prefecture stretches out from the southeast to the northwest in the central and northern parts of the Kansai region. It has four geographical features, the saw-toothed coastal area around Maizuru Bay in the northeast, the Tanba Mountains around its center, the Kyoto Basin in the southeast, and the Yamashiro Basin.
You may meet some 'maiko,' young dancing entertainers, who walk in long hanging-sleeved kimono in the Gion district, see the townscape characterized with popular 19th century style latticework, and visit the Nishijin where they weave traditional 'Nishijin-ori' textiles with vividly colored threads. The festivals in Kyoto are famous not only in Japan, but are also known worldwide. The three major festivals of Kyoto are the Aoi-matsuri Festival in early summer, the Gion-matsuri Festival in mid-summer and the Jidai-matsuri Festival in fall. There is also the Gozan-no-Okuribi, more commonly known as Daimonji-yaki, held on the night of Urabon (August 16th). During this festival numerous torches are ignited on the five mountains surrounding Kyoto, with the flames laid out to form a letter or figure.
Many of the buildings in Kyoto are like symbols of Japanese culture; their architecture sparks awe. Visit Kyoto for a chance to absorb Japanese culture like never before. The traditional artwork, culture, and buildings is inspirational to say the least.
